Rose Tint My World
Thank you all so much for the 52 and counting brilliant, provocative comments to my last entry!

My response, my plan, has been coalescing over the past few days, as I've listened to you all, argued and listened and kissed and made up with my family. But today, Fate brought me what I needed to shape my decision.

One of the first things I saw this morning was Esteban's magnificent post on M Is For Myg. S/he ends it by saying

It comes down to this, motherfuckers: which fantasy will you embrace and how will you fight for it?

And when I read that, I knew. I knew because my [info]galatea_gynoid  had set aside her cool bot demeanor to give us the Word:

What I'd like to someday see is a place like Caledon, a whole series of connected sims and neighbors who agree on a theme and make a wonderful community, except in our case, a positive sci-fi theme, an alternative to the wonderful but way too retro steampunk Caledon, or all the grimy dirty ugly distopian sci-fi themed stuff out there.  Something with gleaming spires and shiny rockets, where a positronic person isn't an anachronism or a legacy of a civilization now gone to hell, but another citizen of the technological golden age, where the sky is no longer the limit, and where we would all live and work and play together.

Then, OP read this article: The Making of a Neo-KGB State, and mourned the squeezing to death of freedom in Russia. On the way home from work, I took over from OP to think about all this, and loaded up my iTunes playlist on random, and got

We're a wild and an untamed thing
We're a bee with a deadly sting
You get a hit and your mind goes ping
Your heart'll pump and your blood will sing
So let the party and the sounds rock on
We're gonna shake it 'till the life has gone, gone, gone
Rose tint my world
Keep me safe from my trouble and pain

Riff Raff

Frank-N-Furter, it's all over
Your mission is a failure
Your lifestyle's too extreme
I'm your new commander
You now are my prisoner
We return to Transylvania
Prepare the transit beam

and yes, you all can picture me, my profile loaded on the wetware server, with the volume turned all the way up (it goes to MAX after you crank it past 65, I learned, which is about the same as "Puree" on a Cuisinart!) singing Frank's lines at the top of my lungs, tearing down the atomic street, visions of rocketships and deco dance palaces with robot big bands dancing in my head!

So, here's what I'm going to do.

I'm going to rose tint my world. I'm going to stand up for the future I want.

It's one of beauty, elegance, sensuality. It's one where we all are free to create ourselves in our own perfect images, and to live as we choose, an it harm none.

I'm going to work with Gala, and with anyone who wants to contribute their time, money and talents to that vision.  I'm going to help build it in SL.  I'm going to live it in SL. I'm going to be a hostess, welcoming all Digital People, all who want the freedom to be themselves. And I'm going to push back against our world's KGB.

If we lose, if freedom and creativity are driven from SL, it won't be because I left anything undone. It won't be because I didn't give my all to building and embodying a better way. It won't be because I kept silent while the agents of corporate conformity squeezed the color from our world.

I'm here to stay. I'm here to build the world I choose to live in, a world of beauty and freedom.

Join me, my loves and friends!  If we succeed, we will have built the new world of our dreams. If we fail, another generation can find inspiration in what we did, and try again.

Either way, it will be glorious!

I love you all!  Now, let's get to work!

I'm so happy that fate sent me your way, Sophrosyne! Translate that little tidbit of mine into Latin, and you've got the motto for your robotopia!

Love,

Esteban

P.S. I'll be there with bells on!

Finding own theme to live in it is not easy as it might seem. It is your inner atmosphere projected and embodied in the prims and textures. And it is not enough just to build a parcel with (terms to be taken broadly) park and a skybox. It is having a nearby parcel extending in somebody's else compatible dream. It is finding the neighbours.

Ah, that's a *very* good thing to keep in mind! Thanks, dandellion - I'm sure we'll be talking more about this! :)

...Soph for Mistress of all Second Life?

Ooh, to be a mighty Queen's personal doll... how delicious a prospect that would be.

Seriously though, it is a mighty vision indeed. So long as things continue as they are, I see no way that Linden Lab could stop us with this dream either. No obstacles but money. :)

I already told you not to worry too much about registration... now I tell you not to be too happy about your dream...I love to be such a spoilsport *smiles warmly*

No, I am not saying you to forget it... dreams are the best of us. Work, burn all your strenght on it when you feel like that and take a rest when you need it, be joyfull or sad when it comes to... but don't be an utopian.

I know I sound cynical, but to me, is better to work day by day for you can get, than dream for something unreachable and don't enjoy what you already have... and no, I am not saying that your goal is unreachable, too... sigh... it is hard to explain it...

One of my favorite phrases is Carpe Diem. Yes, you can have a future in your mind, and pursuit it, but you should never keep your eyes fixed on that future... walk to it while you live and enjoy your present.

My small scripting skills are at your disposition, as all my support and probably none of my money :-p. Don't let my crone eyes cloud your vision *smiles and hugs you*

Dear, dear London-

I've examined your words for a day now, gazing into them in shifting light, trying to truly understand your message.

Let me see if this reply reflects my understanding:

I'm not an idealist. I like *playing* with ideas - if you graphed all the SL bloggers on a line from concrete to abstract, I'd be a point or three farther out than you - about where Kate is, IMO - while Lillie would cover the continuum pretty completely :) But I'm not a *creature* of ideas - they're not real to me, people are.

I know people who look around and see theories, concepts, experiments - gods, I'm not one of those.

But here's what I *do* think. The worlds are *made.* They're made by two forces - the will of those who see the future as fluid, malleable - and the great force of those who take the world at face value, who believe it largely static, or outside their control.

History happens when that second group changes their bets, and that's something they can do overnight.

I'm not an orator, a speaker to the masses. I'm not the person to go to the camper farms and baptize and uplift them, to organize unions. What I can do is welcome the willing, encourage them, network them, give them a space to feel comfortable and safe in being themselves.

Natsumi last night asked me about all the responses to my post on verification, and I told her that what was best for me was that *everybody* felt safe speaking their mind in my home.

I joked that Argent will lead the revolution, and afterwards I'll be the First Lady, throwing the diplomatic parties :)

But that's what I can give. And it's not hard, it's just me being me, but with purpose.

I love you, London, and I love it that you're looking after me. Thank you, always.

I now have to *thanks* these stupid 'ID management' decisions and silly postings in the LL blog... because they somehow triggered you to write such a wonderful and strong, song-like manifesto! At the same time, what else can we expect from you?

I didn't comment on the previous post of yours, but that doesn't mean that it left unnoticed; instead, it made a deep impact and caused many 'chain reactions' in thinking and feeling about SL, what we do there, and what we will do there.

Having read my paper you can guess, I assume, my take on the situation (although I will write my position, and opinion on that explicitly in my blog, promise; I just still gather my thoughts and words for that).

But what I wanted to say..... count me in.

Your support and appreciation mean the world to me, you know.

As soon as Gala, Vidal and I get our core plans finalized, we'll call on our friends for help and suggestions - I'd like to see that happen within two weeks. The three of us are fairly timezone challenged, and I'm chagrined to learn that even in this world, there are things that need to be done synchronously in real time - *blushes and faceplams* - face to face.

So, a couple weeks....

Though, if you're *particularly* interested in being involved, let me know.... :)

So long as there is breath in me, I will defend our collective dream:

Anony -

Ahh, yes. Yes exactly. In my reply to London Spengler above, I said I'm not a utopian, and I mean it. I see utopians as wanting to "perfect" humanity to suit their vision, and I'm not that.

But - we have such beauty in us! If we don't manifest that in the world, WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?

Thank you for your support....

Soph, even if I don't know you very well, I try to follow your blog regularly and I can only say it's good to hear that you decided to stay instead of leaving. If you ever need some neko help on a european timezone, send me an IM and I'll do my best to help :)
