Come Be Our Neighbor!
Here's what we announced at the Diversionarium meeting today:

New Sim FAQ 0.2

Theme

The theme of the sim will be a positive future.  In contrast to the many post-apocalyptic and cyberpunk dystopias, our future is one of hope and evolution towards a better world.  Our future is one of crystal domes and shiny spires, with human, post-human, and entirely synthetic people living in a technological utopia.  Retro-futuristic elements will be welcome, especially from "Golden Age" sci-fi (think Mingo City if Ming had been a benevolent ruler).  Also any positive sci-fi, in particular transhumanist concepts are very welcome.

The setting of the sim will be partially floating city at some undefined point in the ocean.  An independent city-state, a haven for androids, cyborgs, and other people that grew from a small settlement on an atoll into a metropolis spanning across and under the sea.  Parts of the city still rest on the islands, but much is now built on floating platforms, and under domes on the ocean floor.

Theme will be enforced, but we're casting our net pretty wide for ideas, so there are plenty of options.  Everything from "Trekkie"-style to The Rocketeer & Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to Sealab & Seaquest DSV to singularity-inspired to cyberpunk (without the slums) will be welcome.  Just no post-nuclear-holocaust, please.  Mad Max is right out.  :p

Land, Prims, & Pricing

Land in the sim will be double prim land, in order to allow a large amount of open space in the sim.  Of the 32768 sq.m. available for development, 75-80% will be available for residents, who can either build theme-compatible homes or businesses or use ones we provide, while 20-25% of the land will be used for public infrastructure, e.g. parks, meeting places, shiny towers with no specific purpose, etc.  :)

Because this is double-prim land, prices are roughly double what you might be used to if you own or rent elsewhere.  (In fact, what you rent in SL is not so much space as resources, mostly prims.)  That in mind, montly tier cost will be about L$3.67 per square meter per month.  For those who prefer to think in terms of cost per prim, it'll be L$8 per prim per month.  The initial cost will be kept low (equal to two-month's tier) but you will not be able to resell the land to a third party -- when you wish to leave, we will buy the land back from you at the price you paid for it.

So here's the deal.  We have about 12,500 prims up for rental on a Class 5 island SIM.  When we have deposits from people covering 80% of that, or 10,000 prims, we'll buy the SIM and start terraforming.

Please feel free to forward or cross-post this to anyone looking for a new, mature, future-friendly home - or who might be interested in designing and building with us!

I'll post a commitment-o-meter here within the next day or so, so you all can keep tabs on the status.  As of tonight, we have unpaid commitments for 4666 prims, so we're off and running! We expect to be funded at well over 5,000 prims within a few days, so our goal is close!

I'm *really* looking forward to having you as neighbors in a gorgeous new community!

*Much* more to come!

sounds great soph. if my calculations are right, for my present 4608 mainland parcels my prim allowance is 1053. @8L/prim that's 8424 linden a month. 1799 more than my present tier (@265L/$ exchange rate). if there's no fighting among the neighbours it'd be a well worthwhile premium. good luck.

Thanks, EnCore!

By comparison, I'm paying $9937.50/month for 1228 prims on one of TertiumQuid Becloud's island sims, or $8.09/prim.

Plus, of course, I paid about 1/3 more down, and it's not a fully-refundable deposit like we'll be collecting; I'll probably end up taking a loss in this market, but still covering my deposit out of the sale proceeds, with a bit left over.

And, no ghastly McMansions with yacht docks! :P

My sister and I are renting a half sim for $56,000L/mo with the usual number of prim.

I am interested in your project, but being the prim whore that I am (yes, I moved in two and a half weeks ago and am using more than half the prim already) I figured it's probably best for me to just visit. ;)

Wow!

I have a feeling that once I start getting my hands on the commercial and public spaces, I'm going to be in for a lot more too! ;)

I'm going to be building a club (whoa, big surprise there!), but I've already got ideas for the town hall/coffee shop, some things I'd like to see at the spaceport, and Gala's mentioned an undersea neighborhood.....

*sighs* We may have to *start* at two sims...

Seriously, though, if you think you might be interested, talk to us! If we get enough commitments, we might be able to start even bigger!

I don't think either of us are sure how much we can commit to long-term, or I definitely would. It's important to know where the money's coming from when you're starting a venture like that and I don't want to be the weak link. But I am watching. You're very interesting to me and a lot of the topics that you discuss in your forums and such really resonate with me, so don't drop me from any of your groups, I'll start making more stuff eventually. My socialization is rather sporadic, even in sl. lol. Just wanted you to know that I am interested and paying attention, albeit from the sidelines. :)

That's *great* to hear, sweetie!

For me, though I don't know if it's true for my other family/business partners, this project means two things -

one, I desperately want to live with friends and family in a shared aesthetic - so I can live on the ground and not in a sealed skydome to hide from the McMansions!

two, I want to learn how to build communities - physically and socially - so we can grow. I'd *love* to see us be as big, beautiful and attractive as Caledon...

A lot of my work at the Rouge was community building - of a different sort, to be sure - but everyone from the Courtesans to the patrons felt when they walked in the door that they were "home". It was a feeling that I took very seriously, in welcoming them into my family.

I think that intentional family is the most important thing that we have, given how dysfunctional and inefficient most other birth-family systems tend to be.

I think that I am great at building an aesthetic and getting other people to buy into the ambiance, but not so great at necessarily building *with* other people. I tend to be very vision driven and cooperation is very difficult for me as it's my vision dammit. ;) Plus, being a perfectionist and all... but at least I know these things about myself and have learned with time to not put myself in situations that I know from the get-go aren't going to work well for me.

No control isses at all, why do you ask?

*smiles*

I think the structure of community is important and that's actually one of the things I'm struggling with, atm, how to build a new community, a new platform, with a new structure that creates the sort of environment I *want* to be in. I already have the physical structures in-world, I just have to figure how best to fill it.

There's an interesting balance between planning and letting things happen, even moreso in SL I think. You have to create space for what *wants* to happen and be willing to change your plans accordingly.

I am *so* excited about this. Not only will it be my first land/home here, but I'll be right next door to so many good friends, and in themed community to boot!

My plot will be pretty small by comparison...I'm in for 650prims - that's 5200L/month. Using the 3.67L$/sqm figure means I'll have about 1400sqm of land, which should be sufficient.

It won't be a huge place...but it'll be mine :D

Gods, love, I so share your excitement!

I'm completely rethinking my relationship to physical space in SL - I've looked at my reaction to the Project, which has been desperate craving to have my friends and family for neighbors, to be able to look out my window and see your homes - and, it's gotten me to see the world very differently.

I can't wait to see what you'll build!
